There are three events on the social program for the AFAC/BushfireCRC Conference in 2010. The traditional Welcome Function and the Gala Dinner plus a special final night event designed to ensure all delegates experience a bit of the top end!
Dress for all occasions is smart casual - remember it is hot and humid in Darwin - so dress for comfort as well as style! Ladies may wish to avoid high heels for Dinner in particular, as the dinner venue includes some turf surfaces.
Welcome Function The traditional Welcome Functions will be staged on Wednesday night at the Darwin Convention Centre, immediately after the opening session, in the trade area. There will be finger food and refreshments and a chance to catch up with old friends. Extra welcome function tickets cost $65.00.
Gala Dinner The Gala Dinner will be staged on Thursday night at the end of first day of the conference, as in past years. Reflecting the style of Darwin and the Top End, it will be a break from the traditional formal sit down dinner. There will still be plenty of food and refreshments, but will reflect the more casual style of Top End living. Several acts will draw together some of the threads of Darwin's makeup. Although rain is unusual at this time of the year the event will be in the air-conditioned Starlight Pavilion at the Darwin Turf Club. Delegates will be bussed to and from the Turf Club, stopping at all the major hotels and the convention centre. Extra dinner tickets cost $120.00.
Farewell Mixer An innovation for 2010 is the farewell drinks to be staged on Friday night. As most flights leave late on Friday night and a number of delegates are expected to stay for the field trips on Saturday we will be offering a chance to finish the conference with a get together before heading off to the airport or your hotel. The venue is designed to really give you a taste of the top end - this night at Crocosaurus Cove is one not to be missed.
Located in the heart of Darwin the 3 storey attraction occupies almost an entire city block and allows visitors to witness iconic Top End Crocodiles from 3 months to 80 years old in 8 purposely designed displays that can be viewed from all 3 levels. See some of the Australia’s largest Crocs! Enjoy 360 degree viewing of some of the largest Saltwater Crocodiles in captivity, in captivity and don’t forget to check out our most famous crocodile, Burt the star of the iconic Australian movie, Crocodile Dundee! Go diving with Crocs! Visitors to Crocosaurus Cove can get as close as humanly possible to Saltwater Crocodiles in our Famous “Cage of Death”. A unique monorail system that moves over 4 separate enclosures and gives visitors face to face encounters with these amazing prehistoric creatures. Meet the Reptiles! Crocosaurus Cove is also home to the world’s largest display of Australian reptiles including some of the most venomous snakes on the planet. Over 60 enclosures are on display in air-conditioned comfort.
Dress is casual (or bathers if you wish to enter "the Cage of Death").
The event will last approximately 2 hours allowing time for delegates to get to the airport of continue on for dinner. There will be finger food and refreshments. There is no cost for delegates but please see staff at the conference registration desk during the week to purchase partner tickets to this event.
